Happy New Year!

Bipartisanship for effective policy continues as my goal for 2018

Welcome to 2018! I hope the new year finds you in good health and spirits. I know I’m ready to get the 2018 legislative session started!

Because the Democrats won the election in the 45th Legislative District in November, they currently have a one-vote majority in the Senate. We took the opportunity to return to our previous caucus name “Senate Republican Caucus” and have set our priorities for this year.

First, we will resist any effort to backslide on reforms we enacted while we were in control of the Senate.

Second, we will work with the Democrats to complete the unfinished business from last session, including the water-rights issue affecting household wells, the capital budget and satisfying the recent Supreme Court decision on education funding that said $1 billion was needed before the levy reform revenue package takes effect.

Third, we will fight for a budget that balances over four years, as required by law, doesn’t deplete the ‘Rainy Day Fund’ we need in case of an economic downturn, and doesn’t impose new and unconstitutional taxes on you.

I intend to continue my bipartisan work, as I believe that lasting legislation must have support on both sides of the aisle.

Despite having a divided Legislature the past five years, with the Republicans controlling the Senate and the Democrats controlling the House of Representatives, we accomplished historic work on behalf of Washington. Even Gov. Inslee touted the robust political process that occurred here in Olympia because both parties had an equal voice.

It’s the hope for continued bipartisanship and the determination to serve the citizens of the 2nd Legislative District that motivate me this session and I welcome you to share your thoughts with me or visit me in Olympia. Email me at Randi.Becker@leg.wa.gov.
